Why are brands releasing phones with Android 11 operating system in 2022?

In the last ten days, we have seen the launch of two Android smartphones based on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 SoC. Another common feature of these devices is the fact that they come with the Android 11 operating system with a skin personalized on top. Couldn’t guess the names? We are talking about the Xiaomi 11T Pro 5G and the OnePlus 9RT 5G.

Why are brands releasing phones with Android 11 operating system in 2022?

Why are these “high-end” smartphones with Snapdragon 888 SoC launching with Android 11 OS, that too in 2022? Note that both brands actually have phones with the same chipset with Android 12 OS and why the same is not available for newly launched smartphones?

Note that Xiaomi and OnePlus claim to offer three years of software updates and four years of security updates for their respective devices. And we think that might be one of the reasons for the launch of Xiaomi 11T Pro 5G and OnePus 9RT with Android 11 OS. And here is an explanation regarding the same.

Software updates for three years, security updates for four years

The OnePlus 9RT and Xiaomi 11T Pro are confirmed to receive three years of software updates. Note that this does not guarantee three major Android updates. Instead, it just means the phone will get major software support for three years from launch day.

If we take the OnePlus 9RT 5G, it comes with the Android 11 operating system with a custom OxygenOS skin on top, while phones like the OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 9 Pro with the same Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 SoC have already received the Android 12 operating system update. Therefore, the three-year Android update for the OnePlus 9RT will likely include Android 12, Android 13, and Android 14.

If they had launched the OnePlus 9RT with Android 12 OS, they might also have to provide even the Android 15 OS update. Ultra powered by Snapdragon 888 SoC received an Android 12 OS update a long time ago.

Is there another possible explanation?

Yes, another possible explanation for launching phones with an old version of an operating system is to ensure system stability. The brands would have tried to optimize the Android 12 operating system and they might not have succeeded in achieving the quality for which they develop. Thus, launching phones with a stable operating system will ensure that the device does not encounter any major problems.

In fact, OnePlus actually stopped seeding the Android 12 OS update for OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 9 Pro because the update broke some basic functionality. However, Xiaomi has delivered a fairly stable Android 12 OS update for the Mi 11 Ultra.

Note that Android 12 was launched in October and a plethora of devices have already received the same. However, most brands only pushed the Android 12 OS update to their flagship offering to stay relevant. Phones like the OnePlus 9RT and Xiaomi 11T Pro will receive updates based on the Android 12 operating system in the coming months, which should introduce new features to these devices.
