Pakistan’s mobile imports hit nearly $2 billion in 11 months


Pakistan’s Mobile imported phones worth $1.946 billion in the first eleven months (July-May) of 2021-22, compared to $1.860 billion in the same period last year, registering a growth of 4.62%, despite the increase in local manufacturing, according to the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS).

Overall telecommunications imports into the country during the reporting period (July-May) 2021-22 increased by 11.15% from $2.337 billion in July-May 2020-21 to $2.597 billion.

On a monthly basis, mobile phone imports into Pakistan decreased by 35.54% in May 2022 and remained at $137.213 million compared to $212.881 million imported in April 2022, PBS data showed.
On an annual basis, mobile phones experienced negative growth of 21.82% in May 2022 from $175.501 million in May 2021.

On a monthly basis, the country’s overall telecommunications imports decreased by 33.50% in May 2022 and remained at $183.985 million, compared to imports of $276.652 million in April 2022.

On a yearly basis, overall telecommunications imports experienced a negative growth of 16.60% from $220.559 million in May 2021. Imports of other devices in July-May 2021-22 increased by 36.66 % and remained at $651.323 million from $476.612 million in July. -May 2020-21.

Imports of other appliances recorded a negative growth of 26.66% on a monthly basis and remained at $46.772 million in May 2022 from $63.772 million in April 2022 and recorded a growth of 3.71% on a monthly basis. compared to $45.098 million in May 2022.
Local manufacturing plants manufactured/assembled 9.72 million telephone handsets in the first four months (Jan-April) of 2022, compared to 0.86 million imported commercially, according to the Pakistan Telecommunications Authority (PTA).

Local manufacturing plants manufactured/assembled 2.56 million mobile phone handsets in April 2022 compared to 0.25 million imported commercially.

Mobile phone handsets manufactured/assembled by local manufacturing plants in calendar year 2021 amounted to 24.66 million compared to 13.05 million in 2020, an increase of 88%.

Commercial imports of mobile phone handsets stood at 10.26 million in 2021 from 24.51 million in 2020, official PTA data showed.

The 9.72 million locally manufactured/assembled mobile handsets include 5.69 million 2Gs and 4.03 million smartphones. Furthermore, according to PTA data, 53% of mobile devices are smartphones and 47% 2G on the Pakistani network.

However, despite the increase in local production of cell phones, cell phones were worth $1.946 billion in the first eleven months (July-May) of 2021-22, compared to $1.860 billion in the same period of Last year.
